A global catalogue (GC) : is a multi-domain catalogue that allows for faster searching of objects without the need for a domain name. It helps in locating an object from any domain in the forest by using its partial read-only replica stored in a domain controller. A global catalogue is automatically created and maintained by the AD DS replication system.
Every domain must have at least one global catalogue server. A domain controller can locate only the objects in its domain.
Global Catalogue (GC) has two primary functions:
It acts as a domain controller that stores object data and manages queries about objects and their most common attributes (called the Global Catalogue Partial Attribute Set, or PAS).
It provides data that permits network logon
Global Catalogue usage scenarios:
Forest-wide searches.
User logon
Universal group membership caching
Exchange address book lookups
To check GC Server in Site.
Expand each domain controller in "Active Directory Sites and Services", right-click on NTDS Settings, and select Properties.
